About
I went to sea because the alternative was staying in Atlantis and selling insurance. Trained at the Cape, commissioned in 2015, and have spent most of the time since inside a pressure hull somewhere off the continental shelf.
The two years in the middle of my record are not a typo. I left, I built something, it didn't work, and I came back. I'd rather that be on the page than explained away in an interview.

Second in command. Watchbill, training pipeline, damage-control drills, and the running argument about how much coffee a boat can carry.

Back to sea after the company wound up. Requalified from scratch — wet drills included — and started again at the bottom of the watchbill.
Founder & Technical Lead Benthic Systems (Pty) Ltd
2012 — 2014 · Cape Town
Small hull-inspection ROVs for the fishing harbours and small-craft moorings of the Western Cape — the idea being that a R40 000 robot beats a commercial diver for a routine anti-fouling survey.
Two years, four prototypes, one paying customer and a second who kept saying "next quarter". We ran out of runway in October 2014. I did the honest thing, paid everyone out, and went back to the navy.
Before I could go back I had to redo the survival tickets I'd let lapse while I was ashore. Spent a very cold November at the Cape training centre redoing the wet drills, which is not how I'd planned to spend the end of that year.
